Mobile internet

Mobile Accounts for Nearly 60 Percent of Web Traffic

In less than two decades, mobile devices have transformed from a niche convenience into the primary gateway to the internet. Back in 2010, mobile traffic accounted for a mere 3 percent of global website visits, according to data compiled by StatCounter. By 2017, that figure had reached 50 percent, before climbing to about 60 percent on average in recent years: 58.5 percent in 2025, with a peak at 61.0 percent in 2024.

The boom in mobile traffic has been fueled by affordable smartphones, the expansion of mobile‑first platforms (social media, e‑commerce), and faster networks (such as 5G). In many regions, particularly across parts of Asia and Africa, mobile devices often represent the primary (or only) point of access to the internet, helping bridge digital divides and opening new opportunities for communication, commerce and economic participation.
