The grim numbers behind Irish road deaths

23,752 people have died on Irish roads since 1959. The worst year in history for road fatalities was 1972 when 640 people lost their lives. Since then, the situation has gradually improved, though the numbers are still grim. 2012 had the lowest number of deaths - 162.
